It’s not often that a young footballer makes headlines, but Franck, the midfielder who has made a name for himself for his ability to run with the ball and set up teammates, has in this case managed to make headlines.
The German international is playing a part in his club’s pre-season tour, and as the tour wraps up in a couple of weeks, he is looking to help his club progress towards European qualification.
“I’ve been playing my first games in two weeks, and I’ve been enjoying myself,” said Ribéries father, Mario.
“With the team playing well, we feel we can go on a little bit further in the Champions League and reach the knockout stages.”
The club has been working hard to prepare for this tournament, and that is why I’m here.
“It has been a long year, but we are enjoying it.
We’ve been working really hard, and this is our first step.”
It’s a tough task for Ribérys father to be playing in a team which was knocked out of the Europa League at the hands of Bayern Munich in January, as well as a team in which his teammate, Julian Draxler, was sidelined for four months with an ankle injury.
But after making a huge impact at the World Cup and earning a place in Germany’s squad for the European Championships in France in November, Ribérys season has been anything but ordinary.
“We’re not the first team that we’ve played against at the Euros,” said the 23-year-old.
“In our last group game against Lyon, we won 2-1 and were lucky enough to play in the last 16.”
But it’s a very hard league to play against.
The teams who are better than us are always playing strong football.
“When I was younger, I played in Germany.
I’ve always dreamed of playing in the World Championship, and now I can.”
With a season full of goals to his name, Ribereys has no doubt that the team is aiming to take a step towards a first European crown since the 2014 World Cup.
“This is the first season we are playing with a very good team,” he said.
“They have a good team spirit and they are playing very well.”
For me, the goal is to win every single game.
We are playing well at the moment, and we have to keep improving.
“Of course we have goals to reach.
I know it will be tough to reach the finals, but it’s important that we keep going and win every game.”
